Frequently Asked Questions
Everything players ask us before and after buying — answered straight.
Choosing your instrument
I'm a complete beginner — which guitar should I start with?
Start with what you want to hear yourself playing. If you love singer-songwriter or folk music, a steel-string acoustic gets you strumming immediately with no extra gear. If you're drawn to rock, pop or blues, an entry electric with a small practice amp is genuinely easier on new fingers (lighter strings, lower action). Either way, every instrument we ship is set up at our workshop, so a beginner guitar from us plays as well as it physically can.
Acoustic or electric — does one hold you back more?
No. The skills transfer almost completely: chords, scales, rhythm and ear training are identical. The difference is feel and sound. Choose the instrument that matches the music you actually listen to — motivation matters more than any technical argument.
What does "bench-checked / set up" actually mean?
Before dispatch we check and adjust: neck relief (truss rod), string action at the 12th fret, intonation at the saddle, pickup height and electronics, plus a full hardware inspection (tuners, strap buttons, output jack). That's why our guitars feel easy to play from day one.
Do you sell left-handed guitars?
Our online catalogue focuses on right-handed models, but we source left-handed instruments on request. Email partnerships@siliconsilk.ca with the model you have in mind and we'll confirm availability and price within two business days.
Orders, delivery & returns
How fast is delivery in Hong Kong?
Most orders arrive within 1–2 business days. Orders over $99 ship free; a courier contacts you before arrival. See our Delivery Info page for the full breakdown.
Can I pay by card?
We currently accept Cash on Delivery across Hong Kong. Visa and Mastercard support is in testing and will be enabled soon — the option already appears at checkout marked "Coming Soon".
What if the guitar isn't right for me?
You have 365 days to return any item in original condition — one of the longest windows in the business. Full details are on our Returns & Exchanges page.
Care & maintenance
How often should I change my strings?
For regular playing (3+ hours a week), every 2–3 months. Signs it's time: dull tone, discolouration, tuning instability, or rough feel under the fingers. Washed and dried hands before playing noticeably extends string life.
Hong Kong is humid — how do I protect a wooden instrument?
Keep the guitar in its case when not playing, and avoid leaving it near windows, air-conditioning vents or in car boots. Solid-wood acoustics benefit from a case humidifier in dry winter months and a silica pack during humid summers. Wipe strings and the neck down after every session.
The action feels higher after a season — is something wrong?
Almost always it's the neck responding to humidity and temperature change, which is normal for wood. A small truss-rod adjustment fixes it. Our Setup & Maintenance Service covers this — free within the first year on any guitar bought from us.
Is my guitar covered if something breaks?
Manufacturing defects are covered by our warranty — see the Warranty page. Physical damage from drops or misuse isn't covered, but we can still repair it at a fair workshop rate.
